Friargate

Liaison Group

The Friargate Development is a £650 million scheme to redevelop the area around Coventry Railway station. The scheme is a mixed development of retail, office and residential that will revitalise the area. The scheme currently proposes closure of access to the anti-clockwise carraigeway of the Ringroad from Warwick Road.

NENA has taken a close interest in this development as it will have an impact on our area. The greatest impact could be from increased traffic flows caused byconjestion in Warwick Road. There is also the potential of increasded parking from those using the site and the environmental impact caused to the skyline views from Spencer Park.

NENA invited the developors to present their scheme to us and answer questions at our Frbruary 2010 meeting. We have also submitted a resosponse to the outline planning application.

NENA Response to outline planning application

Two NENA representatives have now joined a Resident's Liaison Panel which will be consulted on the scheme and these representatives report back regularly to residents at NENA meetings.

On February 24 2011 NENA presented the following petition to the Planning Committee. The petition contained 467 signatures that had been collected in less than one week:

"As residents of North Earlsdon we are concerned about the impact of the Friargate (Coventry Station) Development Scheme on our residential area and we petition the City Council Planning Committee to safeguard our community by ensuring the following:

  • That the process of consultation be improved and widened to make it more informative and inclusive (the ‘Residents Liaison Group’ is not an appropriate mechanism for a Scheme of this scale).
  • That commuter parking problems are addressed through a Residents Parking Scheme throughout the North Earlsdon area (streets between Earlsdon Ave South and Spencer Ave).
  • That increased traffic loads and congestion in Spencer Ave and Earlsdon Avenue South are addressed through speed and traffic control mechanisms in both of these residential streets.
  • That the environment and amenity of Spencer Park and Recreation Ground is safeguarded and enhanced.
  • That there is transparency and community consultation over the allocation of ‘Section 106’ monies and that such monies be used to fund measures b, c and d above."
